The use of essential oils has gained recognition for its potential to provide natural relief and improve the quality of life for individuals living with fibromyalgia’s chronic pain and symptoms.

Fibromyalgia and Essential Oils?

Fibromyalgia encompasses more than just joint pain; it presents a multifaceted array of symptoms, including fatigue, sleep disturbances, memory lapses, pain, weakness, and mood disturbances.
This condition primarily originates from the central nervous system. One of its most prevalent manifestations, aside from pain, is the notorious “fibro fog,” which often leads to sluggish cognitive function and impaired thinking.
Essential oils offer a promising avenue for alleviating fibromyalgia symptoms, given that this condition is thought to heighten pain perception by altering the brain’s pain processing mechanisms. Peppermint
Peppermint is one of the best essential oils for fibromyalgia. It helps to alleviate pain signals and relax muscles. So, when the pain hits, you can use peppermint oil in either a rollerball or massage into the area that is in pain. Never put oil directly on your skin always dilute with a carrier oil.

Peppermint is a great way to increase your mood. You can use drops of essential oil in a diffuser or with a carrier oil as a massage oil for muscle aches.
Peppermint oil can also help with neurologically waking up your mind during those brain fog days as a natural remedy to increase your energy. It helps to wake up my mind, energize me, and help me focus back on what is needed.
If there’s one oil you definitely need to help with fibromyalgia, it’s definitely peppermint! You can diffuse it for its aromatic properties, or you can use it topically to massage your pain points or temples.
If diffusing use a couple of drops (3-4) and you can also blend it with orange, lemon, lemongrass, tea tree oil, spearmint, and lavender oil. For topical use, dilute with carrier oil either in a rollerball or use 1-2 drops mixed with 1-2 tbsp of carrier oil, and massage into skin thoroughly.
Pink Pepper

Pink Pepper is such a unique oil, as you can imagine it has a spice to its scent, but it also has sweet elements as well! It is sweeter than most of the other pepper oils, such as black pepper.
Now, pink pepper essential oils for fibromyalgia? Yes! It’s a great oil for sore joints and muscles, athletes actually use this with a massage oil for the affected area or area of muscle spasms.
Pink Pepper is also good as a digestive aid and supports cellular health, and focus. With Pink Pepper, you can use it internally, topically, and aromatically. If you’re using it internally, be sure to read information on how to consume essential oils safely, and recent research on the best ways to do so.
With Pink Pepper, you can add some carrier oil to your palm, and then mix in a drop or two of pink pepper. Rub your hands together and massage the sore area. An effective way to use the essential oil use for sore arms and legs which is common with fibromyalgia sufferers.
To diffuse it, add a couple of drops to your diffuser, you can blend it with lemon, grapefruit, clary sage, geranium, sandalwood oil, and nutmeg. If you have an allergy to cashews – be aware that pink pepper is in the same family of plants. Therefore, you may have adverse reactions to this oil.
Cedarwood

Cedarwood essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties and works well for pain and natural treatments for those with fibromyalgia. It can also help improve your sleep and boost productivity. Cedarwood is a great scent for calming your mind and reducing feelings of stress and tension.
In regards to stress and tension, cedarwood helps to combat it quickly! Smelling cedarwood straight out of the bottle is one of my favorite ways to quickly de-stress, and combat my symptoms of fm. When it comes to essential oils for fibromyalgia, cedarwood is a great one for heightened emotions, mood swings, and feeling sluggish.
Cedarwood helps to calm emotions, while also helping increase your focus and attention which can be very needed with a fibro flare.
Cedarwood can be used topically for massage therapy or diffused. If you’re diffusing it use 1-2 drops for a light scent. Use 3-4 for a deeper richer scent in your space. It can be blended with citrus oils, frankincense, ylang ylang, clary sage, lavender, and vetiver.
If used topically combine with a carrier oil such as coconut oil (1-2 tbsps) and 1-2 drops of cedarwood oil and then massage the area. You can also put this into a rollerball to use as needed. A roller bottle is great for chronic muscle pain as you can carry them on the go and use them as needed, ensure to mix with a carrier oil.
Lavender

Lavender essential oil has many benefits and can be used in many different ways. It’s a powerful oil that can help with getting a good night’s sleep, reduce anxiety, and help reduce menstrual pain.
When it comes to fibromyalgia, lavender helps with reducing anxiety and stress brought on by pain, mood swings, or lack of sleep. It also helps promote a night of restful sleep.
This is a fantastic natural sleep aid, that also helps combat neuropathic pain at the same time. You can add lavender oil to warm water, or a hot bath to really enjoy all of its benefits.
Lavender can be used topically, or internally. or aromatically. Please if you do ensure you read up on how to do it safely and ensure to use an emulsifier with it! Topically it can be applied after being mixed with a carrier oil wherever it’s needed.
Diffusing Lavender is my personal preference, it goes well with lots! Some examples of what it can be paired with include lemon, rosemary, vetiver, ylang-ylang, geranium, cedarwood, rose, and sandalwood. You can add a couple of drops to your diffuser, or inhale straight from the bottle.
Bergamot

Bergamot is a sweet floral scent. It is a great essential oil blend for helping cultivate uplifting moods, providing a sense of calm and balance, and easing joint pain relief.
Which covers a lot of what you can feel with a fibromyalgia flare. You can use it topically, internally, or diffuse it. If you do ensure you read up on how to do it safely and ensure to use an emulsifier with it!
Topically you can mix it with a carrier oil in your palm (1-2tbsp carrier oil, 1-2 drops essential oil). Then, massage into the joint that is feeling pain. You can also apply it to your pulse points for a pick-me-up emotionally. To diffuse it add 4 drops to your diffuser. If you’re looking to mix it, it blends well with pink pepper, lemon, lavender, lime, sandalwood, and copaiba.
